IN THE DEEP HEART'S CORE: A MYSTIC CABARET

Celebrate the marriage of great poetry, great music, and theatre. . . In the Deep Heart's Core.  Described by Hedy Weiss of the Chicago Sun-Times as ". . . A rapturous weave of the irresistible sounds of Irish music and the steely but lyrical magic that animates the words of one of Ireland's most celebrated poets, W. B. Yeats," this cycle of songs and spoken pieces from the verses and essays of Ireland's master poet is a stunning evening of musical theatre, poetry, song, and storytelling.  The Chicago Tribune called it "A joy--poetry to the ears, alternately tender and rousing."  The Irish-American News said that In the Deep Heart's Core was "simply not to be missed."

In the Deep Heart's Core ran for eight months at Chicago's Bailiwick Repertory Theatre to unanimous critical acclaim, receiving a Joseph Jefferson Award for Outstanding Original Score. The show has been featured at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. C., a four-week run at Virginia's nationally-known Barter Theatre, a four-week run at Philadelphia's Movement Theatre International, and a national tour.

The award-winning poetic musical “In the Deep Heart’s Core” has been called by the Chicago Sun-Times “one of the loveliest shows now on a Chicago stage.” “In the Deep Heart’s Core” is at once a poet’s autobiography and a deeply moving journey through the romantic imagination and the national soul of Ireland. It follows the life of the Celtic visionary poet and activist William Butler Yeats, moving through dreams and heartbreaks toward ultimate spiritual triumph.  Featuring stunning original musical setting of many of the best-loved lyrics in the English language—and the brilliant singing, playing, and storytelling of composer Joseph Sobol, original pianist Beth Falcone, and a new band of extravagantly talented young singers and string players, Elisa Winter on vocals and cello, Isabella Simon on vocals and fiddle, and Steven Czajkowski on vocals and guitar—“In the Deep Heart’s Core” is a musical event of transcendent power.

". . . A RAPTUROUS weave of the IRRESISTABLE sounds of Irish music and the steely but lyrical magic that animates the words of one of Ireland's most celebrated poets, W. B. Yeats."

Hedy Weiss,

Chicago Sun-Times

"A JOY.  POETRY TO THE EARS.  Alternately tender and rousing. . . .  Warming each note with Gaelic charm and unaffected purity, Cowan's richly textured delivery lifts the "Innisfree" ballad to folk glory."

Lawrence Bommer,

Chicago Tribune

"ASTONISHING. . . . A major accomplishment.  The show has that combination of joy and pathos that comes with the finest of opera."

Edward Morgan,

Washington (VA) News

"Joseph Daniel Sobol has composed music that fits the sense and mood of Yeats's poems, but the music is so distinctively Irish that people partial to that genre would like this piece even if they were not familiar with Yeats.  In addition to being an homage to the poet, this show is A GREAT IRISH SONGFEST. . . . "

Douglas Keating

Philadelphia Inquirer

"Your songs captured the spirit of this greatest of 20th century poets.  The performance combined splendid entertainment with a valuable enhancement of one's knowledge of Yeats.  Thank you for an unforgettable evening."

--Prof. Robert L. Selig,

Purdue University-Calumet

"An extraordinarily rich and beautiful evocation of the genius of Yeats and of his beloved Ireland."

James Flannery, Emory University,   Director, Yeats International Theatre Festival
