Having been interested in plants since his childhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Catskills-based landscape designer and garden writer Dean Riddle finds inspiration in our region’s rocky terrain and topography. It is his goal to create gardens that connect to both personality and place – from the narratives and history of its inhabitants to the sylvan settings, architecture, and materials that the site offers. His work combines his education as a horticulturist in North Carolina and his love of woody plants that he curated while working at Hillier Gardens in the UK to his experience gardening in the Northeast and the inspiration of the surrounding environment. In this conversation, he will share his ideas – as well as photographs of gardens he has created over the years -- for approaching a space and creating a landscape that feels personal while being connected to the natural kingdom it inhabits.
Your $25 suggested donation does more than get you a seat. It helps plant a new Arts-and-Crafts garden behind Dewey Hall, with a stone terrace and an accessible entrance so everyone can enjoy the Hall for the next 140 years.

About The Garden-Makers Talks
Since its founding in 1887, Dewey Hall has been a place for Berkshire residents and visitors to come together for social and educational activities. As we approach our 140th anniversary, the board is making a number of capital improvements – among them, an enclosed garden behind the Hall where events, from our Dahlia Festival and Ice Cream Social to concerts and private celebrations, can spill outdoors and connect guests to the landscape.
Your suggested $25 donation for each program goes directly to the Dewey Hall Garden Fund, which will create our own Arts-and-Crafts garden. The new garden will also provide accessible entry into the Hall, welcoming everyone through a landscaped garden and stone terrace.
